Be Born Again and Awake to Righteousness
Underline "Awake to righteousness" below:
1 Corinthians 15:34
Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
What does the imagery in this verse make you think of?
Underline "he seed remaineth in him", "he cannot sin", and "born of God" below along with anything else that stands out to you:
John 3:1-15 ESV
1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
According to Jesus in John 3:1-15, are you able to enter the Kingdom if you are not born again?
What does being born again consist of?
1 John 3:8-9
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
According to this verse, how can you tell you're born of God (what is the fruit)?
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
How does this relate to Philippians 2:12?
Underline "So speak ye" and "so do" below along with anything that stands out to you:
James 2:11-12
11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
What happens if you break the law according to James?
Circle "Jew" and "Gentile" below:
Romans 2:9-16
9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
Make a column listing what happens for those who do evil vs those who don't.
How does the distinction of Jew and Gentile relate to verse 11?
How does verse 12 relate to John 8:20-26, 1 John 3:2-6, Ezekiel 18:19-32, and Romans 6:23?
How does verse 13 relate to James 1:21-27?
What will we be judged by according to Romans 2:12?
What is included in that judgement in verse 16?
This is Summed up as the Greatest and Least Commandments
Matthew 22:36-40
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Draw a clock or symbol of your choice next to "Till heaven and earth pass" below:
Matthew 5:18-19
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Underline "confirmed to the image of his Son" and "firstborn among many brethren" below:
Romans 8:29
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
John 1:12-13:
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Remember
1 Corinthians 6:17-20
17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
Based on the scriptures in this study how does being born of God affect our body, soul, spirit, mind, heart and sonship? Read 1 Corinthians 6:17-20, 1 Thessalonians 5:23, Ezekiel 18:27, Matthew 11:29, James 1:21, Ezekiel 18:31 , Romans 8:10, Romans 12:1-2, Hebrews 8:10-11, Romans 8:6, Acts 15:9, Ezekiel 36:26, Matthew 22:37, 1 John 3:2, Romans 8:14, John 1:12-13 again and list the benefits for each.
Underline "believe to the saving of the soul." below:
Hebrews 10:39
But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
Hebrews 10:26
For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
Underline verse 46 below:
Luke 6:46-49 ESV
46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.[a] 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
How are those who do Jesus' words described vs. those who do not? How does this relate to James 1:21-27?
Application
Spend some time reflecting on all that you've observed and learned in this study.
How will this affect your life on a day to day basis?
How will this affect your understanding of the Gospel and scripture moving forward?
Take some time to pray in repentance of whatever the Lord is putting on your heart and ask for his grace to live a life pleasing to him so that you may worship Him in spirit and in truth.
If you have not accepted the free gift of salvation and would like to do so it says in Romans 10:9 "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." and in Mark 16:16 "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." Acts 2:38 ESV "And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
And remember Romans 8:1 "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."
“And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”
-Mark 1:15
