The Law of Moses vs. the Law of Liberty

For those who believe salvation is in the Law of Moses (the 600+ laws including moral law, ceremonial and judicial laws etc) and those continuing their study on sin.

Underline  "put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear" and whatever else stands out to you.

Acts 15:5-12

5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.

7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

12 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

How do the yokes in Acts 15:5-12 and Matthew 11:28-30 differ?

In moving from the Levitical priesthood to the Melchizedek priesthood we've come from under the law of Moses. Read Romans 8

Underline "resist" and "have not kept it" below:

Acts 7:51-53

51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

According to Acts 7:51-53 were those who received the Law of Moses able to keep it?

Acts 13:38-39

38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

According to Acts 13:38-39 was the Law of Moses able to justify (make one righteous)?

In the passage below:

Underline "figure", "could not make him that did the service perfect", "carnal", "until the time of reformation", "his own blood", "purifying of the flesh", "offered himself without spot to God" and anything else that stands out to you.

Draw a clock or symbol of your choice next to "until"

Hebrews 9:8-15

8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:

9 Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Were the gifts and sacrifices able to make one perfect according to Hebrews 9:8-15?

What role did Jesus play in atoning for our sins based on how He's described?

Underline "perfection", "being changed", "change also of the law", "out of Juda", and "carnal commandment" below:

Hebrews 7:11-17

11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.

14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

What two things changed in verse 12?

Underline "of thy brethren" below along with anything that stands out to you:

Deuteronomy 18:15 The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

What does Moses say will happen? What does he say we should do?

Underline "from among their brethren" below along with anything that stands out to you:

Deuteronomy 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

Where does the Lord say the Prophet will come from?

How does He say the Prophet will speak in Deuteronomy 18:18 and what does Jesus say he speaks in John 8:26 and John 12:49?

Acts 3:22-24

22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.

23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

What does Acts 3:22-24 say will happen to those who don't listen to the prophet Moses prophesied about?

In the passage below:

Draw a clock next to "till" or whatever symbol you choose.

Underline "unto a perfect man"

Ephesians 4:11-16

11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

In verse 13 it says '"till", inferring something yet to come. What is that according to this verse?

How is perfection described in relation to the Levitical priesthood vs. Christ under the Melchizedek priesthood? Under which is perfection possible?

For the passage below:

Circle who the covenant is with. Notice it's specific.

Draw a square around the word covenant.

Underline "because they continued not in my covenant" and "I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts"

Hebrews 8:8-11

8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

Based on verse 11, has this time happened yet?

What did Israel not do during the Exodus according to verse 9? How did that affect their relationship to the Lord and why?

Triple underline "ten commandments" below:

Exodus 34:28

And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

What is the covenant according to Exodus 34:28?

2 Corinthians 3:6

Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life

Notice in Hebrews 9:8-15 and Hebrews 7:11-17 the Mosaic Law (the Law of Moses) is described as having carnal ordinances and commandments and the Moral Law/Law of Liberty/Ten Commandments is described as being of the Spirit.

Compare what the Law of Moses vs the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus does in those verses? How is that echoed in 2 Corinthians 3:6?

For the passage below:

Circle "children of Israel"

Underline and put a clock next to "But even unto this day"

Underline "liberty"

2 Corinthians 3:13-18

13 And not as Moses, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:

14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.

15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.

16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.

17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

What does it say in verse 14 about the vail in relation to the Old Testament vs to Christ?

What does it say happens to the children of Israel when Moses is read?

How will the vail be taken away according to verse 16?

From the Levitical Priesthood to the Melchizidek Priesthood

Underline “dead works” below:

Hebrews 9:13-14 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Hebrews 10:28-29  He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
